Self-esteem and self-care: Two interrelated concepts.

How to improve your quality of life.

Self-esteem and self-care are two aspects of our overall well-being, ie mental, emotional, spiritual and physical, and lead us to a better quality of life.

What do we mean when we talk about self-esteem and self-care and how do these two concepts complement each other?

  • Self-esteem

Self-esteem is our ability to believe in our own abilities and in ourselves.

It is an internal tool that helps us make our own choices and take responsibility for our lives. People with high self-esteem are better able to cope with life's problems and also have healthier relationships with others. Improving our self-esteem has a positive effect on our overall mentality and our quality of life.

On the contrary, the lack of self-esteem can make it harder to deal with daily pressures on a personal and professional level. People with low self-esteem may be more prone to illness, depression and eating disorders.

  • Self-care

Self-care is the way we treat ourselves and take care of our health and well-being.

What is important when we take care of ourselves is that we have time to discover what makes us happy and makes our everyday a little better. With self-care we become kind and compassionate to ourselves and this improves our sense of well-being.

  • How are self-esteem and self-care related?

Self-esteem and self-care are two interrelated concepts with two-way action. The more we value ourselves, the more we will take care of them and seek to invest in our prosperity and continuous growth. But the more we take care of ourselves, the more we maintain a healthy relationship with them and reinforce positive emotions that build self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Techniques to take care of yourself

The concept of self-care is different for each of us. What is certain is that we do not have to spend a lot of money to take care of ourselves or invest a lot of time if our schedule is very busy. What is needed is to be consistent and dedicate even a few minutes a day to what makes us happy.

So how can you take care of yourself in simple ways?

Establish a beauty routine. Taking care of your skin is not about vanity and maintaining a certain pattern of beauty but it is a way to disconnect from the stressful situations of everyday life and focus on yourself. Apart from the result that the products you will choose will have on your skin, even the process of their application will make you feel beautiful.

Do aromatherapy. Essential oils have a beneficial effect on the psyche. They can calm the feeling of anxiety, anger, depression and stress and enhance the feeling of joy, calm, relaxation and rejuvenation.

Watch your diet. The quality of food, the quantity and frequency of meals are important for health and psychology. Choosing a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, water, lean protein and good fats will help you look and feel good.

Exercise. Exercise helps you stay in shape and thus feel good about yourself. Exercise also releases endorphins that give a feeling of joy and reduces cortisol which is the stress hormone. If you do not have time to attend a specific training program or you do not like the gym you can find alternative ways to exercise such as going up and down stairs, taking long walks, doing housework and gardening.

Sleep well. Make sure you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and go to bed at about the same time. Sleep problems cause fatigue and can be responsible for more serious health conditions such as obesity, depression and mood disorders. Adopt a bedtime routine that will help you relax, such as taking a hot bath and disconnecting from technology two hours before you go to bed.

Listen to your favorite music. Music helps to secrete the hormones of joy. If you feel your mood down, listen to happy music, dance to its rhythm if you want and you will immediately feel better.

Paint. Painting is a very beautiful and effective way to relax, to rest, to forget for a while the problems, to feel like a child again and to connect with your creative side.

Go for a walk in nature. Fresh air, sounds and smells of nature have a beneficial effect on health, drive away stress and tension and enhance the feeling of euphoria. The sun also helps in the production of vitamin D, supports the immune system and improves mood.

Meditate. Even a few minutes of meditation daily will invigorate you. They will help you reduce tension and stress and deal with problems more calmly and with a clear mind.

Travel with a book. Take a break from reality and read a book. After a few pages you will have managed to escape from what is bothering you and you will relax.

Taking care of ourselves is not a luxury, it is necessary for self-esteem and ultimately for our quality of life.
